AE I

A bright summer day at the Black Sea, I asked my parents “What is this?”, pointing to the long scar spreading across the lower pole of my left breast toward the back. Its exposure often caught my eye. “It is from the heart procedure when you were three years old,” my parents explained. I was operated on after being diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus. My parents disclosed that I was the youngest patient in the cardiology unit, but “lost not a gram of blood.” I imagine the physician’s flawless attempts to fight for my life. I learned about his empathic manner after the three-hour surgery: “He held you gently in his arms and tried to make you laugh, all to distract you from feeling pain.” I envision the physician’s joy from his accomplishment, his affection toward me. The cardiologist was my blessed life savior. Comprehending the origin of my scar, I desired nothing more than to follow in the physician’s footsteps, aspiring to save lives.
