A personal statement is supposed to make you stand out from the rest of the other applicants. It’s supposed to give your name a character that would make the admissions committee think that you are a good fit in their institution. It’s a chance for you to showcase your personality, your interests, your experiences, and objectives or even explanations for your scholastic record. Its function is to add clarity and depth to information taken from your other credentials.

So where do you start? You begin by drafting an outline of the things you want to write on your personal statement. Once you have a rough draft of what you may want to convey to the reader, the next steps would be like filling in the blanks.

A personal statement is your life story so to speak. Think critically of your experiences both in and out of the academe and how you can relate that to your application. Put yourself in the shoes of the reader. If this is someone who doesn’t know you, what sort of questions do you think he’ll ask? Try to answer these questions on your paper and be very direct yet substantiated with real-life experiences.

Next is identifying your past successes and the core values that helped you achieve that success. Reflect on what you have done in school, at home, at work, and in the community. These should be things that have an impact on other people. Try to identify if there is a common theme in your activities and write those down. An example of this would be helping to raise funds for a local orphanage. After this, develop a list of attributes that you think best reflect who you are as shown by your actions and achievements as well as your priorities. Examples of core values are creativity, honesty, family-oriented, analytical, etc. Once you have made a complete list, try to narrow your list down to five or six that really make a difference.

Make a list of your goals. How you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years will show the kind of commitment and dedication that you have in your chosen field of study as well as your responsibility to yourself and others. An example of a short term goal is to get a master’s degree in business management from a top university in the country. A long term goal would be to be a senior partner in a big advertising firm.

Lastly, provide a mission statement. This should be a summary of what you have written. It should reflect positivism and hope and desire to enjoy life. A life not centered around trivial matters and one that is always in pursuit of knowledge and growth.
