Juggling Law School and Single Motherhood
April 18th, 2010
Law school is a very competitive intellectual environment. Going to law school means having to spend most of your time studying. The demands can be too much to handle that some law students have difficulty sparing time for their personal life. If you are a single mom who dreamed of becoming a lawyer, don’t let your status be a reason to throw your dreams out the window. There are ways through which you could strike a balance between being a law student and a single mother.
Know your priorities
Your priority is both your studies and your children. If you just know how to organize and plan your activities and schedule, you will find out that you can be a good student and a loving single parent all at once. Spend meaningful time with your children and focus on what has to be done to avoid any clash in your schedules for studying.
Don’t develop the habit of cramming
Cramming is a no-no. If you have an assignment, you have to start it as early as possible. In this way, you won’t feel stressed and pressured when the deadline is fast-approaching. You won’t have sacrifice time that you can spend with your children just because you failed to prepare.
Designate time with your child
Your friends, siblings, and parents may understand that you need to sacrifice some of your time with them, but your kids may not. This is why you have to make it a point to designate quality time for your children, especially if your little one is on his or her formative years. Hiring a nanny is not enough; you must spend time caring for your kid so he or she will know how much you love him or her. Your children can be your inspiration, motivating you to be your best.
Juggling law school and motherhood is not easy but it is possible. You have to set priorities and some boundaries and be ready for any change in lifestyle and habits to make both ends meet.
