Virginia Commonwealth University is a public university in Richmond, Virginia with two main campuses and one of the largest enrollments in Virginia. The University was founded with the merger of the Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia. The Carnegie Foundation has classified Virginia Commonwealth University as a university with high research activity.

The history of the Virginia Commonwealth University dates back to 1838, with the opening of the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College in Richmond. It then moved to its permanent home, the Egyptian Building, which was built in 1845. It eventually became the Medical College of Virginia after it is granted an independent charter by the Virginia General Assembly.

The University is now composed of two main campuses, the Monroe Park Campus in the Fan District and the MCV Campus, located in the financial district and home of the VCU Medical Center.

It holds a number of rankings according to the standards of the US News and World Report. These include the no. 1 ranking in sculpture and nurse anesthesia. It is also 4th placer in interior design and was ranked 9th in communications and 13th in dentistry.

Virginia Commonwealth University offers 52 undergraduate majors, 12 of which are unique in Virginia. In the graduate level, the University offers health programs, which are highly regarded in the country. Students enjoy the benefits of living in the capital, which is the center of culture, business, and entertainment in the state. Most popular majors include biology, business, criminal justice, English, mass communications, nursing, and psychology.

The University is also home to the Illustration Academy. It also offers an accelerated program that combines undergraduate, teaching, and master’s degree in five years.

Application requirements

Requirements for applicants include:

- official high school transcript indicating GPA and class rank
- SAT and ACT scores
- VCU application for admission
- $25 application fee
- letters of recommendation and essays as required by the school

Admission tips

The high school grade point average, class rank, SAT, and ACT scores carry a lot of weight in admissions. Applicants must have graduated from accredited schools with a minimum of 20 units.
Students with advanced study diplomas have greater chances of getting admitted to the University. Different schools may also have different requirements. For example, the College of Engineering requires an interview and essay from the applicant, while other colleges requires applicants to have two to four years of undergraduate study. Applications to the School of Arts require you to submit an Art Admissions Packet and an essay.

The University has guaranteed admission programs where select undergraduate students are given a spot in their chosen courses as long as they have maintained high academic standards. The schools using this program include the Colleges of Medicine, Physical Therapy, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.
